PostSubject: HOW LONG IS A PREPARED RECIPE GOOD?   Sat Mar 21, 2009 10:14 am

I am currently trying my hand at making my own facial/skincare products. I've read both "Gorgeously Green," by Sophie Uliano, and "The Green Beauty Guide", by Julie Gabriel. Today I made the Sweet Almond Oil facial cleanser on this site using whole organic milk powder, a few drops of Jojoba oil (I didn't have my sweet almond oil yet), and water. So how long can I keep the left overs? Does it need to be refridgerated?

Hi Chell,
I'd say with the water yes you'd need to refrid it. If it didnt have the water in it, then it would have a much longer shelf life as Jojoba oil has a very long shelf life and is often used to extend the shelf life when mixed with other oils.

I'd say next time if possible, try only adding the water to a small amout of cleanser right before you go to use it.

And that recipe sounds devine! Let me know how it works, always looking for new cleanser recipes!

Thank you, Kay! So, if I used the oil instead of the water to liquify the powdered milk, that would work to give it a non-refrigerated longer life? Is almond oil as preservative-inclined as jojoba? I really loved the cleanser I prepared, the creamy milk smell was heavenly!

Hi hun,
yep, without the water you'd have a much longer shelf life, even months.

Almond oil has a good shelf life too, but jojoba will stay good for much longer. But since I'm sure you'll use the cleanser in 6 months, both would be great to use.

Here's some info from a seller of carrier oils:

Shelf life: Sweet Almond is slow to become rancid; users can expect 6 Months to 1 Year with proper Storage (cool, out of direct sunlight). Refrigeration after opening is recommended.

Shelf life: Jojoba Golden has an indefinite shelf life for all intents and purposes. It may go cloudy in cool conditions but will return to its natural state once warmed.

I'm definitly going to try the milk podwer, for some reason I never thought of powder. Great idea chell!

Ok--I guesss I was thinking the milk itself would go bad once it was liquified, but it depends on what is used to do that, huh?

I found an online source for organic powdered milk www.fromnaturewithlove.com . Thanks again! I have sooo much to learn. study
